Top ‘O the Morning

When I talk to Christ followers about their private times with God, I hear all kinds of things. One that seems prevalent is … it doesn’t matter what time of day I meet with God, just that I do it.
Respectfully, I beg to differ. Not to be legalistic at all, but to be on the best path to God’s richest blessings. Sure, I can read my Bible and pray anytime during the day, but if I want maximum benefits, shouldn’t I pattern my activities after Scripture?
One overarching Biblical principle is to give God the first. It is demonstrated in the tithe, in observing the Sabbath (which used to be the first day of the week), in dedicating the firstborn to Him, and in the sacrifices of the firstfruits. When I start my day with God, I am acknowledging that it is His. I am giving Him the first fruits of my day. It means I understand that the day ahead of me is a gift from Him and that I will live for His glory.
Jesus got up early in the morning to pray. He did pray at lots of other times, but Mark 1:35 tells us He got up “very early in the morning, while it was still dark … went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.” If Jesus did it, so should I.
David prayed in the morning and then waited expectantly. He had all day to see God answer. (Psalm 5:3)
Abraham got up early in the morning to obey God. (Genesis 22:3)
Job offered sacrifices for his children early every morning, as protection against sin. (Job 1:5)
God’s compassions are fresh in the mornings. (Lamentations 3:23)
Stars sing in the morning. (Job 38:7) Okay, I’m not really sure this is applicable, but if the stars are up having a party, I don’t want to miss it!
If I want the wisdom of God and mind of Christ throughout my day, I will fill it with His words first thing. I don’t know what the day holds, but I want to be ready.
A final thought … I want to know that my pastor, worship leaders, Bible teachers, and ministry leaders start their day with God. It comforts me to know that they put Him first, hear from Him and are filled with Him before pouring out on me.
What are your thoughts?
