Surprisingly Powerful and Poignant
“Transforming Church in Rural America” . . . a book review
I love to read, so I dug into Shannon O’Dell’s book with curiosity, but I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting much. I’m a big city girl. I assumed a book about rural churches wouldn’t apply much to me. But I did want to be helpful and encouraging so I sincerely prayed that God would show me something interesting as I read. I wanted to write an honestly nice review.
Wow! Let me say again, WOW. “Transforming Church in Rural America” is a really good book. I was hooked by the end of the first chapter and could hardly put it down.
It does have cool graphics and pictures. I especially like the short video links sprinkled throughout that add a burst of energy to the reading. However, those things would only be so much marketing without content. This book has content!
God called Shannon and his young family from a thriving 4000 member church in Oklahoma City to a church of 31 in South Lead Hill, Arkansas. He shares many stories of what he experienced both from those he left and from those to whom he had been called. He explains the challenges, the hardship, the struggles, the losses, the pain, and God’s amazing blessings in it all. He also offers solid help and support to churches of all sizes and their leaders. Shannon is real. He is direct. He is passionate.
My favorite section is titled, “Leadership 201: Resisting the Urge to Settle with the Church.” A sampling . . .
Anyone who resists complacency has the potential for leadership. The people you attract with money are little more than ministry mercenaries. What you need are people who will give their lives for the vision no matter what it costs.
Cast the vision. Have them in your home. Eat with them. Build relationships, relationships, relationships.
The greatest seminary ever is when you wake up at 6:00 in the morning and you get on your knees and face God and then you walk out and love on people.
Your life, marriage, and family must teach without words.
Great stuff, Shannon!
